After some brief respite from our shows related to COVID-19, we return to the topic and in this show Dr Dan and Jamieson discussed the “Quarantine 15” – weight gain experienced by many people during the pandemic.
Economic problems including lay-offs, furloughs or nagging job insecurity, higher levels of stress pushing cortisol levels through the roof, insomnia, eating less well, lack of gym access and the challenges of home schooling, social isolation, and the lack of a defined end can all contribute to piling on the pounds.
Being overweight or obese is a significant risk factor for needing hospital treatment or severe outcomes from COVID-19.
During a pandemic there is a lot there is that we can’t control, the trick is to focus on the things that you can control. Habits can form in 30 days or so, and the duration of the pandemic has given us plenty of time to create new habits (healthy or otherwise).
We gave listeners some top tips to prevent the “Quarantine 15” and also encouraged them to take on a healthier Doc Talk approved version of “Quarantine 15”!
