Doc Talk #190 – Chewing the Fat

A recent study caused some raised eyebrows among scientists recently, when it showed that not only did consumption of saturated fat not increase the risk of stroke, but the more saturated fat the lower their risk!

If you want to dazzle your friends at dinner parties or at the gym with your knowledge of the biochemistry of fat, then this is the show for you.

Dr Dan and Jamieson talked about the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats (through some rather dubious metaphors). They delved into the world of monounsaturated fat and trans fats.

We also played a game of “Guess the Fat” where Jamieson (mostly) got the answers right and was able to distinguish between different types of fat.

The conclusion of the show? Perhaps with the exception of the true villains of trans fats, it is difficult to be too dogmatic about fat. We recommend eating a Mediterranean diet (or similar) and not being overly concerned about fat itself.
