Doc Talk #123 – Health Literacy

We talked about “health literacy” in this show. Some shocking statistics from the US suggest that almost half of adults would struggle to give their child the right tylenol dose.

Health literacy is about having a basic knowledge of health and health-related topics. Without the knowledge, skills and confidence it can be difficult for people to understand health issues and take proactive measures to ensure their own health and that of their family.

NHS Scotland has done some really interesting work on health literacy and here is a link to some work in Alberta on self-care.
