Doc Talk #103 – Have Fun Outside, but Don’t Get Fried!

In this show we talked about sun safety.

Jamieson and Dan discussed the difference between UVA and UVB, and how this relates to the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) on sunscreen.

Find out more about and check your local UV index here

We discussed some tips on how to have fun in the sun safely, including use of sunscreen, sunglasses, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and covering up.

The amazing jingle that introduced the show is from a new version of a highly successful public health campaign in Australia. You can view the original version from the 1980s here and the updated version here.

We also discussed skin cancer including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. We talked about the ABCDE of moles. As ever, if in doubt, it is important to consult your family doctor.

Got sunburn? Here is some information from MyHealth Alberta. And remember to Slip, Slap, Slop so you don’t get it again!
