Doc Talk #99 – COPD

Here it is – the show that we thought was lost! In this episode we talked about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is a form of lung disease, it is particularly associated with smoking, but is also found in other populations such as farmers.

We discussed what COPD is, how we test for it and how it can be treated.

In Vegreville, Lakeland Respiratory offer local testing, education and support for COPD, as well as smoking cessation and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Importantly we also talked about lifestyle measures which might reduce your risk of COPD.

Smoking cessation is the single most important intervention. Your family physician is always a good resources, but Alberta Quits also offers free smoking cessation support online, by text, by phone and in group sessions.

If you are known to have COPD then early treatment of infections is important, as is immunization against pneumonia and influenza. If you use medical oxygen, it is critical to avoid smoking because of the potential fire hazard.
