Doc Talk #79 – Antibiotic awareness

In honour of the World Health Organization antibiotic awareness week, we went back to the dawn of antibiotics. We talked about the first patient treated with penicillin, Albert Alexander, who unfortunately died because of a lack of antibiotics.

Ironically we now face the very opposite problem – an excess of antibiotics!

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health

We discussed some of the ways in which listeners can help the antibiotic resistance problem.

There are some great resources at Do Bugs Need Drugs.

  • Only use antibiotics when recommended by a healthcare professional
  • Never demand antibiotics
  • Never share or save antibiotics
  • Prevent infections with hand hygiene, careful food preparation and immunizations
