Doc Talk #53 – Back pain

Dr Dan and Jamieson discussed back pain in this show.

Most back pain does NOT need X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans. Even if you take an MRI scan of people without any back pain- a surprisingly large number have signs of significant wear and tear.

Listen again to learn about what to do if you are afflicted by back and to learn about some of the warning signs that need further investigation.

We mentioned a couple of really good resources on the show: the first is ‘Treat your own back’ by Robin McKenzie – a slim, inexpensive volume that has done wonders for some of my patients; the second resource is this excellent leaflet with some great exercises for back pain from Berkeley university.

Lifestyle is an important factor in back pain and avoiding obesity and maintaining high levels of physical activity are crucial.
