Doc Talk #24 – Anxiety



Following on from our popular show on depression, we discuss another mental health issue: anxiety.

Anxiety activates ‘fight or flight’ systems, causing a surge of adrenaline, racing heart and fast breathing. In certain situations, this can be helpful, but when it merely makes things worse it is maladaptive.


Jamieson shared his own experience of a panic attack.

I waited 10 hours to see a doctor, because apparently everybody in the building but me knew I was suffering a panic attack and not a heart attack


Anxiety triggers a set of sterotypical physical responses. We discussed some techniques for managing panic attacks, including relaxation, deep breathing and distraction methods.


The Anxiety Disorders Association of British Columbia has put together the AnxietyBC website – a complete set of tools and resources to help you manage anxiety.
