Doc Talk #1 – The Annual Physical

In our first ever episode Dr Dan discussed the ritual of the annual physical.

Random poking and prodding in the hope of picking something up is generally not very useful.

Don’t (just) get physicals, get physical!

What is important is to consider those things which really influence your health: smoking, high blood pressure, physical activity and other elements of the lifestyle.

Being overweight will increase your risk of osteoarthritis of the knees, for example, which might interfere with your plans for a healthy retirement (as well as issues around diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure).

60% of Canadians are overweight are obese.

Physical activity is highly protective.

  • Adults should accumulate 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a weeek

If you are diabetic, have high blood pressure, lung disease or other significant medical conditions, you should consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.
